survivors

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors.

Now, ten years on, just 12 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled 'Retrieved'.
The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.
Traveling across nine states in the U.S. from Texas to Maryland, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas, 34, captured the remaining dogs in their twilight years in their homes where they still live with their handlers, a full decade on from 9/11.
Their stories have now been compiled in a book, called Retrieved, which is published on Friday, the tenth anniversary of the attacks.
Noted for her touching portraits of animals, especially dogs, Charlotte wanted 'Retrieved' to mark not only the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, but also as recognition for some of the first responders and their dogs.
'I felt this was a turning point, especially for the dogs, who although are not forgotten, are not as prominent as the human stories involved,' explained Charlotte, who splits her time between New York and Amsterdam.

<img These two dogs, Sussa and Klonkie burrowed their way out of Uitsig Animal Welfare in Durbanville/Fisantekraal area on 9 August 2011 at 18h00.
This is devastating as Uitsig kindly took these two in after another welfare worker's neighbours complained about all her dogs, and she had to give them up absolutely wailing as she brought them through to Cape Town . The dogs clearly felt the same way and are probably trying to smell their way back home, 200kms up the West Coast.

Please everyone, Sussa does not have good hips and may not be able to keep up with Klonkie. We beg and plead of you to please send this to every single person in your address book. Sussa is very, very scared, so if you see either of them, please follow them at a distance, and call any of the following people:

Denay: 076 224 2207
Richelle: 073 928 6236
Jolene: 082 447 8866
Kathryn: 082 955 1875
Wendy: 083 270 5161

Thank you for reading and forwarding this. Every vet or shelter has a microchip reader.
At least put a collar and ID tag on them. All this would help to quickly reunite a stray with his owner and reduces the need for shelters. Only about 5% of pet owners take this precaution, and less than 10% of lost pets ever get reunited with their owners. The rest end up in shelters.

Will you please lobby the British and Australian Governments to scrap or modify their antiquated and inhumane quarantine laws causing such a lot of heartbreak, enabling emigrants to take their pets with them instead of offloading them at shelters to do the dirty work?

Animals are killed in the townships in the name of "cultural traditions"! We rescued Amber from the bush. She was unable to care for herself, so we guess that her mother died or that she was dumped as a kitten. She looked like a six-week-old kitten and she was covered with ticks. I pulled 42 tics from her little body that day.

We discovered that she must have been about eight months old when she was diagnosed as being pregnant. She delivered four live kittens.

When we adopted Onesock, a few years ago, Amber remained in the room that we locked her in when she first came to our house and also the room where she gave birth to her kittens, for over a year. She would not come out, even though Onesock was a puppy when we got her.

When we have visitors, Amber hides so no one can find her.
She trusts only my husband, Onesock, and myself who she now bosses around.

I do not know how much she understands of what we say, because I discussed her situation, of not leaving the room, about a year after we adopted Onesock, and wondered if it would not be kinder if we 'put her to sleep' because she did not seem to have any quality of life. The very next day she came out and spit at the dog then showed her all her infantry; a set off sharp teeth and nails to math. She showed her who was boss, as if she wanted to say if anyone needs to be 'put asleep' it should be this invader.

Now she has another fearful journey ahead. A life full of strangers and no familiar space to hide in. We do not know yet, what we will do. We would hate to see her suffer when we relocate, but perhaps change is something she needs to experience. At least we will be there to cuddle her when she is fearful.

HERE IS A LINK THAT MAY INTEREST YOU

Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre

Does your charity start at home?

I visited a charity shop the other day and saw a notice asking for donations of animal food. I was wondering why they did not use the profits the sales of the free donations to buy animal food. It is then that someone told me that some charity shops are self employment agencies. I wonder if that new little car parked outside the shop was bought with charity money.

There is a website that teaches people how to run a charity in order to pay themselves a fat salary from the charity money.

Personally, I do not think there is anything wrong with working for charity as long as the charity benefits more than you do. There are quite a number of charities around where the organizers pay themselves first and I wonder how much is left from the monthly takings to pay their charity. It is very difficult to keep track of money going in and out when there is only one paid employee running the place.

I recently tried to contact someone who campaigned for money to help neglected animals, to find she was overseas. I am not saying she used the charity money for overseas trips. I do not know, but it could easily happen.

Perhaps we should encourage people to choose employment that will benefit those in need of help, but there should also be a system to protect employers from greed and exploitation.

Adopt a Bunny

<img style="float:left; We are
hoping that he managed to escape and is trying to find his way
home.
He is 7 months old and answers to Simba and Munchkin. He is
Alsation X. Black with tan markings. He likes smiling. He has
medium length hair with long hair on his tail and his ears are very
fluffy and almost blond. He needed advice on what to do with them. He said that someone dumped them next to the freeway.

The kittens were in a cage in his car. They were amazingly quiet. I got the impression that they were "pap"

When they saw me they started mewing and came to my side of the cage. I so wish I could have taken them. I love cats, but I know that I would not be able to pay their veterinary fees. Also we are planning to move in the near future. I do hope they find homes. By: Blaauwberg Animal Trust

“I am looking for an outside dog!” This is a statement heard over and over again by adoption staff at Animal Welfare Organisations. Is this a new breed or a special breed or yet another misconception on dog’s behaviour by humans?

Dogs are pack animals and as such they not only need but also want to be in a social group. Dogs in the wild do not live outside in isolation; they form a pack, dig an underground den and live with the pack inside this den. ( Heaven help them if they try digging their own den in our well manicured gardens) To deprive a dog of their pack is seen by the dog as a punishment. If a member of the pack needs to be disciplined the pack leaders as a punishment chase them out of the den.

Now transfer this to a domestic dog. By making the dog live outside, separated from the family which is his pack, is seen by the dog as a punishment. This can lead to behavioural problems such as excessive barking (calling for the pack), boredom, which can lead to destructive behaviour, or separation anxiety. A dog that lives permanently in the backyard will get to know every square centimetre of that yard and soon become bored.

In fact, banishing him from the house for a short while can be used as a good training method, but not as a permanent way to live.

Many people believe that large dogs should live outside while small dogs live inside. (Where does this leave midsize dogs?) This is again a misconception, because small dogs think or behave the same as large dogs. Does a man who is 6ft 4ins think differently to a man who is only 5ft 7ins?

Many people believe that a dog outside is the best protection against burglars. Wrong again! If they are not allowed inside they do not recognise the house as part of their defended territory. Since dogs have no concept of property, they do not guard it, but they will protect packs and territory. But why should a dog protect a pack it is separated from? How many times have you read in the paper, “I don’t understand why we were burgled? My dogs were in the yard and did nothing!”

Also a barking dog can be a burglar’s best friend. If a dog living outside barks excessively, the owners inside soon become oblivious to the barking. The constant barking will irritate the neighbours but it can also mask any noise being made by the burglar. Poisoned meat or a knife can easily silence a barking dog!

A dogs hearing is vastly superior to that of a human. If allowed to sleep inside, they will hear any noise long before we do. They will start to bark or growl, hence sounding the alarm. The barking is a warning “ I am here and if you enter I will protect my pack”. If it is in the middle of the night a barking dog awakes the owners and the alarm is given. No burglar will risk entering a house with a dog barking inside as firstly the alarm has been raised and their presence is known, secondly they do not know how big or vicious that dog is and fear being attacked and possibly badly bitten.

If a dog is made to live outside they can be hesitant to protect their owners as the fear of punishment for crossing the threshold can be greater than the instinct to protect the pack leaders!

People often ask “But what about me being at work all day and leaving the dog outside?” This is quite different. The dog believes that the pack leaders are off hunting. This belief is reinforced when the owners return, as that is when they usually feed the dogs.

If he is allowed inside the house when the owners return home, he recognises it as part of his territory and will guard it.

Then there are shorthaired dogs like Boxers, Rottweilers or Staffies who, due to non-existing insulation, suffer badly in our cold and wet winters when left outside at night, even with a wooden kennel. One consequence of this would be the early onset of arthritis and rheumatism. Therefore, if you still insist on keeping your dog outside, please choose well-insulated, longhaired breeds like Huskies, German Shepherds or Border Collies.

To get the best from your dog as a companion and protector he should be treated as a member of the pack and allowed to share the packs den.

adopt from rescue shelters

Reasons why you should adopt from rescue shelters rather than buying from breeders or pet shops.

Please take the time to read this case for adopting from rescue shelters, or at the very least, please share this with everyone you know. We need to stop the murdering of innocent animals because the people who they trust have let them down. Yes it may hurt you to read it but your pain is brief and emotional. Their pain is very real and continuous and in most cases will end in their death. They rely on those who “own” them to do right by them. Their lives hang in the balance. We MUST educate those who are ignorant and punish those who are cruel and selfish. Taking a stand has never been more important than right now. DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

A Letter from a Shelter Manager

Hate me if you want to. The truth and reality hurts. I just hope I may have changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold or gave away will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that your dog will never walk alive out of the shelter it has been dumped in? Purebred or not! About 50% of all the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays" that come into my shelter are purebred.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving to that doesn't allow pets? Did you really not enquire beforehand?

They say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German shepherd would get?

"We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!

"She's tearing up our garden". How about making her a part of your family?

They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her. We know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog". Don’t kid yourself. Face reality : you have just signed her death warrant. Live with that !!

Odds are your pet won't get adopted and how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will have to be killed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long. Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are killed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be killed because shelters just don't have the money to pay for even a R 100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down"

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always think they are going for a walk, wagging their tails happily. Until they get to "The Room", where every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by one or two helpers depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. Kittens and puppies’ veins are too tiny for a needle so the executioner carries out death by lethal injection by thrusting the needle straight through the sternum into what they hope is the little beating heart. Sometimes they miss and hit the spleen.... the liver. Enough said. And don’t let anyone tell you they don’t do this to baby dogs and cats. THEY DO!! THERE IS NO CHOICE.

When it’s all over, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back together with all of the other animals that were killed, waiting to be collected like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Turned into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?
I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head. I deal with this everyday on the way home from work. And many of us become alcoholics to drown the nightmares.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists and I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter. Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are good homes.

The point to all of this?

Don’t buy a puppy or kitten from breeders or pet shops while shelter pets die.

Don’t breed your dog or cat. Have her sterilised.

You want your dog or cat to have just one litter for your children to witness the miracle of birth? Then you should be prepared to complete their education by allowing them to witness the miracle of death in the backroom of a shelter.

You never have a problem finding good homes for your puppies or kittens? Visit them six months later to see what happened to them. Still there? Lonely and neglected in a backyard or a happy part of the family and allowed to sleep inside?

When you are old, don’t adopt a puppy or very young dog when there is a good chance that they will outlive you. Rather give an older cat or dog a peaceful home.

Don’t acquire a pet on a spur of the moment or give in to the demands of a whining child. Dogs can live twelve to sixteen years depending on breed, cats up to twenty years. Where will you be fifteen years from now? Taking pets with you when emigrating is not an option because of endless quarantine and costs.

Don’t ever “rescue” a puppy from a man standing on a street corner. By paying him you encourage puppy factories and hamper efforts by animal charities to sterilise township dogs. And what do you do afterwards? Give it to a charity, only to be killed in the end? Or keep it and deprive a shelter dog of a home?

Edited by Blaauwberg Animal Trust 021 552 1712 joti@xsinet.co.za 15.02.09

ID TAGS

Very Important : Every dog and cat will go missing at least once in their lifetime.
